Our Marriage Was Almost Failing. This One Secret Fixed It.

home & family time & productivity tips & hacks Sep 04, 2025

If you’ve ever felt that the very business you started to bless your family was beginning to pull it apart, you’re not alone. I see you, and I’ve been there.

Ten years ago, my husband and I were living a comfortable, predictable life. We both had our master's degrees, he had a successful corporate career with one of the biggest brands in the world, and I was a stay-at-home mom. We had the benefits, the 401k, the whole nine yards. But listen to this… deep down, we both felt a quiet pull, a sense that we were made for more.

So, with a mix of prayer, planning, and a whole lot of hope, we took the leap. We started our own company.

From "Suburbia Life" to Startup Stress

At first, it was exciting. You hear those stories of overnight success, and you can’t help but picture that "rainbow ride" for yourself. We knew it would require sacrifice, so we downsized our spending and adjusted our lifestyle. We were all in.

But then, reality hit. And let me tell you, it was hard. Very, very hard. The pressure was immense. My husband carried the weight of providing for our family, and I was juggling the household, supporting him, and trying to contribute to the business. We were both giving it everything we had, but the stress of entrepreneurship is a unique beast. It doesn't just stay at the office; it follows you home, sits at the dinner table, and tucks you into bed at night.

And the unspoken cost? The very thing we were trying to build a better future for—our family, our marriage—was starting to crack under the strain. We were so focused on our individual roles that we stopped functioning as a team. We were starting to drift apart.

When the "Rainbow Ride to Success" Doesn't Happen

Have you ever had that feeling? That you and your partner are living parallel lives under the same roof? That’s where we were. The connection was fading, replaced by the constant, low-grade hum of stress and logistics. It felt like we were becoming co-workers in the business of running a family, not partners in life.

It got to a point where we knew something had to change. We had to do something drastic, or we would lose the very thing that mattered most. The business was meant to serve our family, not the other way around. We needed a reset.

The "Reset": How a Business Meeting Saved Our Marriage

And here’s the deal: the solution wasn’t some complicated relationship therapy. It was a tried-and-true business principle we decided to apply to our marriage: the daily check-in. In the corporate world, teams have daily syncs to stay aligned and support each other. So, we thought, why not do that for our most important team?

Every morning, after the kids left for school, we started taking just fifteen minutes to connect. We’d go for a walk or just sit and chat. We asked each other how we were really doing, beyond the surface-level stuff. It was eye-opening. We looked at our calendars and asked, "How can I support you today?" And we ended by coming together in a shared prayer, aligning our intentions for the day.

That simple, intentional act of checking in did more than just get us organized. It created a space for vulnerability and honesty, which is the bedrock of emotional intimacy. It rebuilt the trust and security that had started to erode under the pressure. We started to feel that sense of relief that comes from knowing someone truly has your back.

This one habit enabled my husband and I to go from a married couple to truly being teammates in our lives, our businesses, and our parenting. It unified us in a way I didn’t know was possible.
